Actor: Laurence Olivier, Brenda de Banzie, Roger Livesey, Joan Plowright
Summary: A drama of seedy music hall life centering on Archie Rice, an egotistical, third-rate British music hall performer whose career and personal life are in a down-hill spiral.
Review: The method acting displayed by Marlon Brando and James Dean revitalized what it meant to be good film actor in the fifties. Suddenly, the bravado and theatricality of Laurence Olivier, once deemed the greatest actor of his generation, came across as stiff and silly instead. To combat this, Olivier gave a career-changing performance in the bleak, depressing The Entertainer. Under the direction of Tony Richardson, the vibrant Olivier transforms into a sad, old, drunk vaudeville performer who has long passed his expiration date. Uninterested in any respect or recognition now, he simply tries to live day after day, no matter who he has to exploit to do it. The move was a success and introduced Olivier’s skills to a whole new generation of filmmakers.

Movie poster for Festival Express

Festival Express

Director: Bob Smeaton
Summary: During the summer of 1970, a series of music festivals took place across Canada. After the first festival in Toronto, the musicians, their roadies and a film crew traveled by private train to the remaining festivals in Winnipeg and Calgary. This is the story of the Festival Express. The tour was a financial flop, and thanks of a fight between the festival promoters and the film producers, no film was edited or exhibited. So this film is, in effect, a brand new film from 1970. If the tour itself was not a success, the party that accompanied it became legend: take one private train, add eight bands full of talented musicians get impromptu jams fueled by drugs and liquor in every car. The main attraction is two now deceased headliners, Janis Joplin and Jerry Garcia, seen both on stage and off. Filmed only two months before Joplin's death, the sequences involving her are truly electrifying and capture her at the height of her self-consuming talent. The Grateful Dead are captured while in the midst of recording and releasing its two essential albums (Workingman's Dead and American Beauty). It captures a pure moment in time when musical hearts and minds beat as one, when musicians of all stripes--without benefit of publicists, handlers, or security goons--came together to work and play hard and leave behind one damn fine-looking corpse.

Radiant and winning, Garland sings 'It's a great day for the Irish', 'Singin' in the rain' and more classic tunes. Shakespeare purists will probably be horrified that Branagh has juxtaposed the Bard with classics by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George and Ira Gershwin, in a loving homage to the great musicals of the '30s. For the premiere of 'Prairie Wind' Young gathered long-time band mates and old friends like Emmylou Harris for a performance that has the feel of a casual reunion picnic. Held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium--the original home of the Grand Ole Opry, and a room with what may be the finest acoustics in the universe--the whole ensemble nattily attired in neatly tailored traditional western get-ups, it is as if the ghosts of the Ryman are singing through them. Young's songs speak to ensuring continuity between the past and the present, while cutting a path into the future, and he and his fellow performers open themselves so wholly to their surroundings that they become a part of it.
